5 TV Shows to Watch to Prepare Yourself for American Culture


1)      Friends is a classic TV show about the typical friendship structure amongst most Americans. Phoebe is your classic hippy, peace loving weirdo and is one of the funniest TV characters on TV. Ross is the usual nerdy guy who is desperately in love with the pretty girl. Joey is the typical jock who did not do well in school, and is an unemployed actor. Rachel is the pretty girl who had to start over after a broken engagement, and relies on her looks to move up in the world. Chandler has an extremely sarcastic sense of humor, but deep down is a very sensitive guy. And Monica used to be overweight in high school, and is an attractive up and coming chef. This is one of the great things about America that you can have 6 completely different people become best friends for a lifetime.

2)      The Walking Dead shows you how Americans would react if society would collapse. Based on the comic book series written by Robert Kirkman, this gruesome drama portrays life in the weeks and months following a zombie apocalypse. Sometimes Americans can be very kind and selfless people, but sometimes they can be very self involved. In The Waking Dead you can experience different situations on how the American people might react when teamwork and unity are needed. Besides portraying potential American reaction to the end of the world, The Walking Dead is extremely entertaining and thrilling.



3)      Mad Men is a drama about New York’s most prestigious ad agencies in at the beginning of the 1960’s, focusing on Donald Draper and the firm’s extremely talented ad executives. You can see how American ad agencies first started to convince Americans to buy both necessities and non-essentials using psychology and basic understanding of the human mind. Not only will you fall in love with the characters, each episode will leave you wanting more.



4)      The Big Bang Theory is a show about American intelligent nerds interacting with themselves and the real world. They characters on the show will have you laughing every second of the episode. One of the funniest thing about the show is how one of the main characters Howard a rocket scientist interacts with Penny an up and coming actress waiting tables at the cheesecake factory. The Big Bang theory portrays how smart people are perceived by other Americans in a sarcastic but warm manner.




5)      Even thought Arrested Development only had 5 seasons it displays the typical lifestyle of many upper class Americans in a humorous way. The Bluth family has to cut back on their lavish lifestyle after the SEC puts their Father George Bluth under investigation. His level-headed son Michael has to take over the duties of CEO when his father is in prison. The whole show is about the family struggling through this ordeal in their sarcastic and over-privileged way.
