To be able to use your device overseas with another provider other than the one your purchased the device from, you must make sure the device is unlocked or sim free. The best way to determine whether your device is unlocked is by either trying to use another sim card in your phone, or by contacting your provider directly. Below is a simple guide to each provider’s specifics:
Note, all iPhone 5 models are already unlocked, so you can go ahead and use another sim card in your device without having to do anything else!

Prepaid customer
Dial *#06# into your handset and you will see the serial number of your phone (IMEI). Then, call the unlocking centre on 125 8880 and the request will be submitted. After 72 hours, the process will be complete, so simply connect your device to iTunes.
Depending in your specific model, the unlock fee may cost between $50-$150.
PostPaid Customer
Unfortunately, we could not determine the cost for unlocking other devices, or even whether or not they are unlocked to begin with. We suggest you contact customer support directly at 125111.
Post-Paid iPhone customers
Whether or not you’re currently with Telstra, any iPhone purchased from their company can be unlocked by using this online service. After 72 hours, the process will be complete, so simply connect your device to iTunes.
iPhones
All that have been sold by Optus are unlocked, make sure to upgrade to ios 7 and you can simply use another sim card in your device.
Any other devices, you must go to this site, and follow the directions based on your specific device, purchase date, and contract terms. The cost varies between $0-$80.

Make sure your device is on the latest software and then your device is unlocked at no extra cost. You can simply inset the new sim card

Have at least $80 credit in your account and then ring the customer service line 1300 555 100 with your exact phone model and IMEI ( serial number that can be found by dialing *#06# into the phone) and they will provide you with the unlock code.
Postpaid customers:
Ring the customer service line 1300 555 100 with your exact phone model and imei (serial number that can be found by dialing *#06# into the phone) and they will provide you with the unlock code.
In either case, especially if the device is a newer one, please allow 7 working days for the unlock code to arrive from the manufacturer.
iPhone customers

You have the choice of contacting customer care by dialing 1555 from your phone directly or unlocking the device online. Please note that there is a fee for unlocking devices:
Phones purchased within 6 months cost $100 to unlock via customer care or $75 online
Phones purchased over 6 months ago cost $50 to unlock via customer care of $25 online
